Know Your Water Heaters: Tank, Tankless, and Heat Pump

Water heaters are important parts of the American home. Without them we wouldn’t have a choice and would be forced to take icy cold showers. Every once in a while though, we still have to endure the unpleasantness of a cold shower when that water heater starts to fail. Maybe it just needs repairs but it may also need replacement.

When you come to the stage of needing a water heater replacement, it helps to know more than just the fact that you need hot water. You will also want to know what your options are for this comfort system because there is more than one option available to you now.

We are the professionals who keep your comfort in mind so we want to help. We have described a little bit about your hot water heater options below to help you make an informed choice when the time comes.
So, what are your options? The modern buyer can now choose between a traditional tank (on-demand) water heater, a tankless water heater or a heat pump water heater. Here is what you need to know about them;

Tank or On Demand Water Heaters

When most people discuss water heaters, they are referring to the well known tank or on demand, type of water heater. This water heater contains a large multi-gallon tank that holds and heats water. This is an efficient system that works especially well for homes with high water demands as it keeps hot water on hand and at the ready. The main downside to this heater type is that it presents a source of energy loss because it has to keep the water within it warm at all times.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters operate without a tank because they heat water as it flows through the system. This presents a host of savings including energy savings and water savings. It also means that you won’t ever have to worry about running out of hot water if you take too long of a shower. This system is also quite compact in size, saving you space in your home too. The main downside of this type of heater, however, is that it can only produce so much hot water at once so if you have more than one person showering the results won’t be as good.

Heat Pump Water Heaters

A heat pump water heater employs the same technology as a heat pump: it moves air from around it and transfers it into the water within it. This is a highly efficient water heater for your home, especially when compared to other electric water heaters. While the upfront installation cost is much higher, this system pays for itself pretty quickly thanks to its higher level of efficiency. However, much like a heat pump air system, your heat pump water heater won’t work very well in extreme cold.
