Here Are Some Tips for Lowering Your Water Bill

As a contractor who performs HVAC services as well as plumbing services, we often get asked about how to lower the monthly cost of heating and cooling the home. When it comes to plumbing, it’s a similar game: people want to know how they can lower their monthly water bill.

The answer to both is virtually the same: use your resources wisely, and don’t be afraid to make upgrades for the sake of efficiency.

In this post, we’ll explain various ways you can start lowering your water bill.

Check Appliances and Fixtures for Leaks

No amount of water saving tips in the world will help you if your appliances are leaking water. Check everything from the bathroom faucets to the dishwasher to ensure that there are no leaks.

If your water bill has you suspecting that there’s a leak in your system you just haven’t found yet, try turning off all the appliances and checking the water meter. Any movement will indicate a leak. Have a plumbing pro in Fort Worth, TX come inspect the home if that’s the case.

Install a Low-Flow Toilet

You wouldn’t think that toilet technology would need to get any more advanced, but when it comes to saving water, there’s always room for improvement.

Low flow toilets use significantly less water than full-flush toilets, and they were even made mandatory for the US. Even so, not every home has upgraded from their full-flush toilets. If this is you, making the switch should help lower your annual water expenses.

Spend Less Time in the Shower

Using the shower instead of the bathtub can bring some significant savings to your water bill. But in the shower, it’s easy to lose track of how much water you’re using.

We’re not saying you should go back to using the bathtub every day. Instead, make the effort to significantly reduce your shower time. Every minute in the shower equates to about 2.5 gallons of water.

Don’t Waste Water While Brushing or Shaving

It’s an easy mistake that most of us make. While brushing our teeth or showering, we tend to let the faucet keep running. When you stop and analyze the behavior, you realize that there’s really no use for it. You can correct this by filling a cup of water and using that to dip your razor or to rinse from.

Rely on Your Dishwasher More

You would think that using the dishwasher is the “lazy way” to wash the dishes. And it still might be. But as it turns out, using the dishwasher is better for your water bill.

The rate at which you wash dishes by hand—which we can measure as minutes-per-gallon—will typically exceed the number of gallons used by the dishwasher.

Replace Water-Using Appliances With More Efficient Models

Unlike showering or brushing our teeth, we don’t have control over how much water our appliances use. In that case, you may have to upgrade your dishwashers and washing machines to their most efficient, Energy Star approved models.
