AC Not Maintaining Set Temperature

Dealing with a malfunctioning cooling system is never a good time. You’re hot, frustrated, and ready to lose your cool! But before you go off the deep end, know that there are some very simple solutions for dealing with an AC system that won’t cool your home properly. Stick with the HVAC professionals at Frymire Home Services while we lay out the best ways to troubleshoot an AC that won’t keep its set temperature.

Simple Troubleshooting Tips

Before we get into problems that require professional service, let’s start with the simplest problems and solutions. Here are the first things you should inspect, in order:

  • Look at the thermostat – Before you do anything else, go to your thermostat and inspect the settings. It’s possible that they’ve been set incorrectly, or that the thermostat was bumped or interacted with unintentionally. The temperature should be set to a cooler temperature than the outdoors, and the fan should be set to “auto.”
  • Check the breaker – Breaker trips aren’t a common occurrence, but they do happen. If the thermostat was set correctly, go to your breaker panel and check the breaker responsible for covering your air conditioning system. If the breaker is tripped, simply reset it. However, if the breaker trips a second time soon after, you may need AC repair or electrical service.
  • Change your air filter – When the airflow in your cooling system becomes restricted, it can lessen the amount of cool air that is released back into your home. Even worse, restrictions can cause AC overheating, which will trigger short cycles, ice formation, and other common issues. If your filter is gunked and filthy, change it and you may solve the problem.

Signs You Need Professional AC Repair

All of the above problems are a fairly simple fix, even for a novice. However, there are also a plethora of possibilities that will require the tools and knowledge of a professional AC repair technician. Other common possibilities for why your AC won’t cool efficiently include:

  • A damaged thermostat – Most modern thermostats are rated to last around 10 years before needing to be replaced. If it’s been this long for you, or longer, there’s a strong chance that this is the cause of your trouble.
  • Refrigerant leaks – When an air conditioning system lacks adequate refrigerant, it will continue to operate for a while, but will produce little to no cool air. Eventually, the system may begin to freeze over, leak water, or overheat.
  • Blower assembly or fan damage – If your fan and blower assembly is worn out or has been damaged, your system will be unable to move much air, which results in poor to no cooling output.
  • Failing AC capacitor – When the capacitor fails, your compressor can no longer function, which results in poor heat movement. Most commonly, this problem produces clicking noises from the outdoor unit — your fan may be operating, but the compressor will not be.
