Should I Have My Water Tested?

water-testingWe rely on our taps for clean, potable drinking water, and often we have nothing to worry about. Homeowners don’t typically feel the need to schedule water testing services, but it never hurts to know exactly what is in your home’s water, especially if you and your family frequently drink from the tap. As the saying goes, “It’s better to be safe than sorry.” At Frymire Home Services, we recommend municipal water testing, especially if you start to notice anything funky about your water supply.

The Benefits of Routine Water Testing

Health and Safety

So much of our health relies on our access to clean water. High-quality water is the safest option for you and your family. Contaminants in your water can leave you with a variety of health issues. One of the most common contaminants in water is lead, and too much of it is never a good thing! Knowing exactly what is in your water will grant you peace of mind.

Savings

Yes, testing your water can save you money. When a plumber tests your water, one of the things they are looking for is hardness in the water. Softened water keeps appliances such as your washing machine and dishwasher running efficiently. Softened water also helps prevents clogs in showerheads, faucets, and drains. Water heaters greatly benefit from softened water as well. Running hard water through a water heater can reduce efficiency by almost 50%! You might be running hard water through your system and not even know it!

Routine water testing is highly recommended, yet there are going to be times when we definitely recommend water testing. If you notice these problems with the water coming out of your tap, have your water tested as soon as possible:

Water discoloration

There are several reasons why the water coming from your faucets may be discolored. For example, yellow, red, or orange water indicate that there is rust in the water. If your water looks green or blue, it might be an issue with the copper plumbing. Large amounts of copper can cause health issues.

Discoloration around faucets and drains

The discoloration you see is typically due to mineral deposits that get left behind. This often happens when you have hard water and is referred to as hard water buildup.

Odd taste

An odd taste can be a symptom of a variety of things such as bacteria, chemicals, copper, iron, chloride, sulfide, or even antioxidants. If your water tastes funky, it is best to get your water tested to figure out the cause.

Health issues

Untreated tap water can cause infections of the stomach and intestines. If you or a member of your family suddenly begins experiencing any gastrointestinal discomfort, you should consider getting your water tested. We know that most people attribute their symptoms to the stomach flu, but you want to be sure the water you consume is safe.
