A ductless mini split system consists of an outdoor unit housing the compressor, similar to a conventional air conditioning system. But instead of connecting through refrigerant lines to a single indoor unit, it connects to multiple smaller units around the house. These mini-air handlers are mounted up on exterior walls, where refrigerant and power lines from the outdoor unit connect to them through the back of the walls. Inside the air handlers are a fan and refrigerant coil so they can cool the air and then blow it directly into the room.
A ductless system not only allows you to ditch the old window AC and have cooling around the house with a single installation, it offers other benefits:
- Most ductless mini splits are heat pumps, so you can use the system to provide heat during cold days.
- The lack of ducts means there’s no heat gain for air traveling to rooms. This improves the efficiency of the system.
- No ducts also means not having to spend money on duct repairs and duct cleaning.
- Each air handler can be operated separately from the others, so you only need to cool (or heat) rooms that need it.
