3 Plumbing Upgrades for Your Home

For once, wouldn’t it be nice to think about your plumbing and not have it be a crisis? There’s a lot to be said for being proactive instead of reactive. Maybe your water heater is just about at the end of the line, and you’d like a new tankless system. Or maybe you want to install a water filtration system to improve the quality of your drinking water. No matter what, with some careful thought and help from plumbing professionals, a variety of plumbing upgrades such as the ones below are at your disposal.

Plumbing Upgrades

Because it’s not a crisis with water all over the floor or a sink that just won’t drain, you may have the urge to attempt significant plumbing upgrades on your own.

While a few homeowners have the experience and tools to do this, most should consult with and utilize their local plumbing experts to make sure the job is done right.

1. Tankless Water Heater

Traditional hot water heaters are not particularly efficient. They keep 30-60 gallons of water heated 24/7 even if very little is needed on a given day. Or, if you’re gone on a trip, no hot water is needed at all.

An upgrade from a tank hot water heater is a tankless system. These smaller, wall-mounted units are more efficient because they only heat water when it’s needed. In addition, they supply continuous hot water as opposed to you having to wait for another full tank to heat up.

One word of caution: If you have multiple bathrooms or other areas using hot water at the same time, you may need to install separate systems for each one.

2. Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System

When it comes to water filtration, reverse osmosis is your top-of-the-line choice. Reverse osmosis is the process by which molecules move through a semi-permeable membrane from a more-concentrated solution to a less-concentrated one.

For water filtration, a series of three cartridges is used. The first one is a carbon filter to remove sediment and large particles which can damage the membrane. The second cartridge contains the membrane which filters out smaller substances such as lead, arsenic, nitrates, copper, and more. The final cartridge is another carbon filter to remove any remaining particles.

The water is then put in a storage tank until needed. After going through a final inline filter, the resulting water is pure and tastes incredibly fresh.

3. Sump Pump

While not quite as technologically exciting as a tankless water heater or a reverse osmosis filtration system, a sump pump can be a valuable addition to your plumbing system to help avoid flooding.

To install a sump pump, a pit – the sump – is dug at the lowest point in your house, usually the basement. Then, a pump is put either in the pit or just above it. When flooding occurs, water will flow to the sump first where it can be pumped outside via a drainage pipe.
