Get Rid of Those Window ACs and Go Ductless!
When the window unit was invented in the 1950s, it was a revolution in home cooling. Central air conditioning systems at the time were prohibitively expensive and few homes could afford one. A house needed to be built with a complex ventilation system to even permit central air conditioning. The window AC put an affordable cooling solution into the hands of homeowners. In fact, we can credit the window air conditioning unit with helping to spread the population through the sunbelt. It was easier than ever to live in a warm climate.
That was a long time ago. The central AC is the affordable standard for new homes. If your home uses window units but lacks the space for ductwork, you may think you don’t have the option for a better type of system.
But you do! It’s called the ductless mini split system, a.k.a. ductless heating and cooling. It allows you to ditch those ugly, inefficient, and limited window air conditioners and enjoy cooling throughout the house.
How a Ductless System Improves Over the Window Unit
A ductless mini split isn’t exactly a type of central cooling system—not like the standard split system ducted air conditioner you’re familiar with. Instead, it combines the point cooling benefits of a window AC, sending cooled air directly into a space without needing ducts, without the drawbacks of window ACs.
A ductless mini split system consists of an outdoor unit housing the compressor, similar to a conventional air conditioning system. But instead of connecting through refrigerant lines to a single indoor unit, it connects to multiple smaller units around the house. These mini-air handlers are mounted up on exterior walls, where refrigerant and power lines from the outdoor unit connect to them through the back of the walls. Inside the air handlers are a fan and refrigerant coil so they can cool the air and then blow it directly into the room.
A ductless system not only allows you to ditch the old window AC and have cooling around the house with a single installation, it offers other benefits:
- Most ductless mini splits are heat pumps, so you can use the system to provide heat during cold days.
- The lack of ducts means there’s no heat gain for air traveling to rooms. This improves the efficiency of the system.
- No ducts also means not having to spend money on duct repairs and duct cleaning.
- Each air handler can be operated separately from the others, so you only need to cool (or heat) rooms that need it.
- No dusty ducts means healthier air quality, great for people with allergy and asthma.
